Application Scenarios
In a refinery’s main process compressor train, the protection system must continuously monitor radial vibration, axial thrust position, and speed across multiple channels. The 3500/05 rack houses the power supplies, RIM, and a combination of vibration and position monitors in a single 19-inch chassis, allowing all modules to communicate through a shared backplane without external inter-module wiring. When a vibration monitor detects an exceedance, the rack’s backplane routes the alarm signal to relay modules and the communication gateway simultaneously, ensuring both local trip logic and remote DCS notification occur without additional cabling. This integrated architecture reduces wiring complexity and eliminates a common failure point in protection systems.

Key parameter notes: The full-size 3500/05 provides 14 usable module slots after the required power supply and RIM positions are occupied. The Bulkhead mount option is not available on the Mini-Rack. When internal barriers are installed, a 3500/04-01 earthing module is required and consumes a dedicated slot.
Technical Principles and Innovative Values
Innovation Point 1: Integrated Backplane Architecture. The 3500/05 eliminates external jumper wiring between monitoring cards through a high-reliability internal bus. Vibration monitors, relay modules, and communication gateways exchange data and alarm signals through the backplane, reducing cabinet wiring density and the associated risk of loose or misidentified connections during maintenance.
Innovation Point 2: Configurable Mounting for Retrofit Flexibility. The rack is available in panel, rack, and bulkhead formats, allowing integration into both new cabinets and existing installations where rear access is unavailable. The bulkhead format provides front-access wiring and I/O connections, making it suitable for wall-mounted or space-constrained retrofits where pulling the rack for service is impractical.
Innovation Point 3: Scalable Slot Allocation. After the mandatory power supply and RIM positions, the remaining 14 slots accept any combination of 3500 modules. A single 3500/05 can host vibration, thrust position, temperature, speed, and relay modules simultaneously, allowing the protection system to be tailored to the machine train without multiple chassis or external communication links between monitoring functions.
