Description
The 20DC085A0ENANNANE is an Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation PowerFlex 700S adjustable-frequency AC drive, 400 V AC three-phase input, 85 A continuous output, rated 45 kW (60 HP) normal duty / 37 kW (50 HP) heavy duty. It is the “blank plate” variant of the Frame 4 700S: IP20 / NEMA Type 1 enclosure with conformal coating, Phase II control with expanded cassette, standard incremental-encoder feedback provision, no Human Interface Module (blank plate), no brake IGBT, no drive-mounted brake resistor, no embedded communication module, and a second-environment EMC filter per the CE EMC directive (89/336/EEC).
It is the workhorse of the 380–400 V class: a six-pulse front end, a 540 V DC bus, 4 kHz PWM (selectable 2/4/6/8/10 kHz), and a control engine capable of V/Hz, FORCE™ field-oriented vector control (with or without encoder feedback) and brushless permanent-magnet motor control. For plants that cannot justify a drive migration but cannot afford a stop, the 20DC085A0ENANNANE is the part that keeps the line moving.
Application Scenarios
A bulk-material handling terminal in Northern Europe runs a 45 kW belt conveyor, a 37 kW stacker slew drive and a 30 kW reclaim feeder on three PowerFlex 700S drives in a common DC bus. The conveyor must hold torque at zero speed while a ship-loader positions, then accelerate 180 tonnes of ore without slipping the belt. A V/Hz drive would have needed a 30% oversize and a torque limiter. The 20DC085A0ENANNANE, running FORCE vector control with the standard incremental-encoder feedback option, holds rated torque from 0 to base speed and regulates speed to 0.1% of base speed across a 120:1 range—without encoder, and to a tighter figure with one.
The plant’s real problem was not performance but environment. The drive room sits above a transfer tower; conductive dust, washdown mist and traces of H₂S from the ore pile make it a G3 atmosphere by the ISA-S71.04 definition. The conformal coating on the 20DC085A0ENANNANE is not a cosmetic option—it is the reason the control-board trace under the IGBT gate drive did not become a resistor. When one drive eventually failed after nine years, the fault was a failed heatsink fan, not the coating. A replacement fan, a cleaned heat sink and a re-torqued bus bar returned the drive to service in under two hours. The spare on the shelf was a 20DC085A0ENANNANE, pre-programmed from a saved drive project, and the only configuration change required was the node address.
The same drive solves a different problem in a water utility. Here the load is a 40 kW centrifugal pump with a 4–6% continuous regeneration requirement during valve throttling. The 20DC085A0ENANNANE cannot return energy to the line—it has no brake IGBT and no internal brake resistor—so the DC bus rides up and the overvoltage trip fires. The correct, and characteristically PowerFlex, answer is a common DC bus: tie the DC terminals of the pump drive and a second, motoring drive together, and let the regenerated energy become acceleration energy. No resistor, no heat, no trip. That is an architecture, not a setting, and it is the reason experienced Rockwell shops still specify the 700S long after the catalog has closed.
