Application Scenarios
In a large-scale aluminum smelting facility, a 900 kW DC drive system powered the potline crane’s travel and hoist motors. The drive’s rectifier bridge was vulnerable to catastrophic failure during commutation faults—a single thyristor short-circuit could cascade through the power stack before the upstream circuit breaker could react, destroying multiple expensive semiconductor modules and causing weeks of production downtime.
The engineering team installed 170M5715 fuses directly in series with each phase of the rectifier bridge. When a commutation fault occurs, the 170M5715 clears the fault current in a fraction of a millisecond—far faster than any thermal-magnetic circuit breaker could respond. Its 200 kA interrupting rating ensures the fuse can safely extinguish the extremely high fault currents available at the drive’s DC bus, while its aR classification guarantees the fuse will not open on normal motor starting inrush or transient overloads that are harmless to the semiconductors. After the retrofit, a rectifier fault that would previously have destroyed an entire phase stack now results in a single fuse replacement, reducing repair time from days to under an hour.
