Application Scenarios
A 600 MW coal-fired power plant in the Midwest was battling chronic nuisance trips on its pulverized-coal burners. The existing flame detectors could not reliably distinguish the target burner flame from the intense infrared glow of adjacent flames and hot refractory walls. The result: false “flame present” signals during ignition, followed by hard trips when the detector briefly lost sight of the flame — disrupting steam production and costing the plant an estimated $18,000 per unplanned trip in lost generation.
The plant’s combustion engineering team retrofitted the boiler front with the 45RM4-1001. Its 16-position rotary frequency selector let technicians tune the scanner precisely to the low-frequency flicker signature of pulverized coal combustion — a range where the flame-on to flame-off signal ratio was strongest. The large-area PbS cell resisted “washout” from high background brightness, while the BGC function ensured the flame signal decreased when the monitored flame went out, even as refractory glow increased. The 10-segment LED bargraph simplified alignment, cutting commissioning time by more than half. Most importantly, the electronic self-checking shutter — driven by pulses from the existing 25SU5 amplifier — verified scanner integrity on every cycle; a failed shutter or blocked optical path could never produce a false “flame present.” Over the following 18 months, nuisance trips on the retrofitted burners dropped to zero, and the plant reported a 22% reduction in forced outages attributed to flame-detection issues.
Parameter
| Main Parameters | Value / Description |
|---|---|
| Product Model | 45RM4-1001 |
| Manufacturer | Fireye (USA); now part of Integrated Process & Sensors (Ip&S) |
| Product Category | Self-Checking Infrared Flame Scanner Head (optical front-end, not a standalone detector) |
| Series | 45RM4 (Bulletin CU-31) |
| Lifecycle Status | Discontinued (legacy); 95IRS2-1 is the recommended replacement. Remains a critical spare for thousands of installed systems worldwide |
| Supply Voltage | 24 VDC (+10%, -15%), supplied by compatible Fireye flame amplifier or external power supply — 24VDC operation eliminates the 60 Hz / 120 Hz electrical noise associated with AC-powered scanners |
| Current Consumption | 100 mA per scanner (typical) |
| Photodetector | Large-area Lead Sulfide (PbS) photoconductive cell — wide dynamic range resists cell washout under high background brightness |
| Spectral Response | 700–2500 nm (infrared band) — covers the strongest IR radiation of coal, oil, and gas flames |
| Frequency Selector | 16-position rotary switch, covering flame flicker frequencies from approx. 20 Hz to 150 Hz — tune to the frequency giving the best flame-on vs. background ratio |
| Signal Indication | 10-segment LED bargraph on rear panel for at-a-glance flame signal strength during alignment and operation |
| Self-Check Mechanism | Electronic shutter assembly — replaces the older electromechanical shutter but still requires a shutter pulse from the companion amplifier to activate |
| Background Gain Control (BGC) | Selectable function that inversely adjusts gain with flame brightness; ensures the flame signal drops when the monitored flame goes out, even if background brightness rises |
| Gain Adjustment | Internal potentiometer on rear of housing for fine sensitivity tuning |
| Mounting Thread | 1″ BSP (British Standard Pipe, 1″-11 BSP-PL) — not interchangeable with the 45RM4-1000, which uses 1″ NPT |
| Housing Material | Die-cast aluminum with black textured finish |
| Electrical Connection | Quick-disconnect interface; mates with Fireye 59-470 6-wire shielded scanner cable |
| Sight Pipe Connection | 1″-11½ NPT or 1″-11 BSP-PL sight pipe |
| Purge Air Connection | 3/8″-18 NPT or 3/8″-19 BSP-PL |
| Operating Temperature | -40°C to +65°C (-40°F to +150°F) per most technical references; some distributor listings state -25°C to +65°C |
| Humidity | 0% to 95% RH, non-condensing |
| Purge Air Requirement | 4.0 SCFM (113 L/min) minimum at the 3/8″ inlet; up to 15 SCFM (425 L/min) for high-temperature or “dirty fuel” service |
| Purge Air Quality | Clean, oil-free, and uncontaminated |
| Dimensions | Approx. 8½″ (217 mm) long; 1-11/16″ (43 mm) hex; 2″ (51 mm) minimum clearance required for removal |
| Weight | Approx. 2.4 lbs (1.1 kg) |
| Safety Approvals | FM, APAVE (CE mark obtained when installed with appropriate amplifier); CSA listings on related 25SU5 controls |
| Compatible Amplifiers | Fireye 25SU3 series (5166, 5168, 2100, 4169T) and 25SU5 series (5011, 5012, 5013) flame safeguard controls |
