Application Scenarios
A 660 MW coal-fired unit undergoing a turbine-control life-extension programme had its Ovation remote I/O rack located on the turbine deck, approximately 450 m of cable run from the controller cabinet in the main control room. The original copper RIO link ran through the same cable tray as several large motor feeders and a 6 kV switchgear bus, and the plant had recorded two unexplained remote-node communication losses during motor starts — neither of which produced a trip, but both of which removed important bearing-temperature and vibration data from the operator’s displays for the duration of the event.
The plant installed the 1C31181G02 at the local controller end and a matching remote MAU at the turbine-deck rack, converting the run to 850 nm multimode fibre. The fibre is immune to the ground-potential differences and induced transients that had affected the copper link, and the four channels allowed the same module to serve the turbine-deck rack plus three further remote points without adding another controller. After conversion, the plant recorded no further unexplained communication losses on that node over a full operating cycle, and the P/C/E/I LEDs on the module face gave the maintenance team immediate visibility of link health during routine patrols.
The underlying problem the 1C31181G02 addresses is distance. A remote I/O architecture is only useful if the link between the controller and the remote rack is more reliable than the signals it carries. In a power plant, running that link as copper through switchgear and motor feeders turns every voltage transient into a potential data-integrity event. Converting to fibre at the MAU removes the conductive path and the ground-loop mechanism in one change, without requiring a second controller or a full system upgrade.
