Main Features and Advantages
FlexApp adapts one part number to four different machines: The most expensive thing in a genset panel is usually the variety, not the volume. The Woodward 8440-1750 addresses this by letting the commissioning engineer select the breaker philosophy in software rather than by buying a different controller. A rental unit with no breaker control, a standby set with a single GCB, and a full AMF and ATS installation with both GCB and MCB can all be built on the same hardware, which simplifies spares holding and training considerably.
True RMS measurement that protects correctly: Protection relays and controllers that measure average rather than true RMS values are fooled by the harmonic distortion produced by modern loads and by generator waveforms under transient conditions. The Woodward easYgen-1500-55B measures true RMS on both generator and mains, with Class 1 accuracy across its FlexRange voltage inputs, so over- and under-voltage, over- and under-frequency, overload and reverse power functions trip on what is actually happening rather than on a distorted approximation of it.
Protection and monitoring in a single enclosure: Instead of assembling separate over/under voltage, over/under frequency, overload, phase sequence and synchronism check relays plus a separate annunciator and metering package, the Woodward 8440-1750 consolidates them, complete with configurable trip levels, delay timers and alarm classes. Fewer devices means fewer inter-device wiring faults, a smaller panel, and one place to look when something trips.
LogicsManager for application-specific sequences: Not every installation fits a template, and the Woodward easYgen-1500-55B includes LogicsManager, which lets an engineer combine measured values, internal states and I/O with Boolean operators and programmable timers. This is how site-specific requirements such as a delayed fuel valve close, a conditional load shed or a custom pre-alarm sequence are implemented without external relays or a PLC.
Communication that reaches the engine and the plant: J1939 over CAN gives the controller direct access to engine ECU data, while CANopen supports expansion modules, and Modbus RTU over RS-485 connects the genset to a PLC, SCADA or building management system. The Woodward 8440-1750 therefore works both as a stand-alone controller and as a node in a larger power management architecture.
Built for the operator and for the auditor: The DynamicsLCD with softkeys gives local operators direct control and clear status, ten display languages make it usable by international crews, and the 300-event recorder with battery-backed clock produces the timestamped history that post-incident reviews and NFPA-compliant installations require.
