The YOKOGAWA AFG10S is a Field Control Unit (FCU) that functions as the central processor of a Yokogawa Field Control Station (FCS) within a CENTUM VP distributed control system. Classified as a single-configuration controller, the AFG10S executes all regulatory control, sequence control, and logic operations for the FCS, while the RIO bus it controls links the processing intelligence to the physical I/O nodes that interface directly with field instruments. Together, the FCU and its connected nodes form the complete FCS, with the YOKOGAWA AFG10S providing the computational core that turns raw field measurements into closed-loop control action.
The AFG10S is engineered around a 133 MHz VR5432 processor and equipped with 32 Mbyte of main memory, double the 16 Mbyte capacity found in the lower-tier AFS10S. This additional memory headroom allows the unit to handle larger, more complex control strategies and expanded I/O node populations without sacrificing scan-time performance. A battery-backed power-failure protection circuit preserves main-memory contents for up to 72 hours during an outage, with a minimum 48-hour recharge cycle, ensuring that control logic and process context survive utility interruptions and resume without reloading.
Designed as a 19-inch rack-mountable chassis, the YOKOGAWA AFG10S supports dual-redundant Vnet interface connectivity and either dual-redundant or single RIO bus connections to its I/O nodes, with a maximum of eight connectable nodes. A dedicated two-terminal (NC/C) FCU status contact output signals a controller failure externally, allowing the plant’s broader alarm infrastructure to react instantly to a loss of control processing. As a key component of Yokogawa’s RIO System Upgrade program, the AFG10S offers a direct, validated migration path for modernizing legacy FCS installations while preserving existing field wiring and control strategies.
