Application Scenarios:
A pharmaceutical excipient line runs four K-Tron loss-in-weight feeders, each dosing a minor ingredient into a continuous blender. The feeders are gravimetric: they measure the weight of the hopper continuously and infer feed rate from how fast that weight falls. That means the entire accuracy of the dose rests on a load cell reading differences of a few grams against a hopper that weighs tens of kilograms — and a load cell is only as stable as the voltage exciting it.
The line had been fighting a recurring problem. Several times a week, batch records showed a short excursion in feeder mass flow, always small, never enough to trip an alarm, and never reproducible in the workshop. Maintenance had replaced a load cell, then a motor drive, then rewired a shield. Nothing changed.
The cause was upstream of all of it. The plant’s incoming supply was being disturbed by a large compressor starting on the same bus, and the feeder cabinet’s original power board was dipping with it. The voltage transient never lasted long enough to shut anything down — it lasted just long enough to perturb the weighing electronics, and the feeder controller faithfully reported a mass-flow perturbation that was really a power-supply event.
Installing the 9191-30390 resolved it, and the reason is specific. Its two large capacitors guarantee at least 60 ms of mains buffering, so a disturbance of that kind is absorbed before it reaches the weighing electronics. Its internal electrical isolation keeps high-frequency noise from the feeder’s own AC and DC motors off the control and data lines. And because it regulates cleanly across a 100–240 V AC or DC input, it is tolerant of the fluctuating networks and battery-backed supplies found in older plants — which is exactly why ABB specified it this way.
This is the pattern across its installed base: anywhere a controller, a precision transducer or a communication card needs clean, uninterrupted DC in a cabinet that shares a bus with motors, drives and compressors.
Parameter:
| Main Parameters | Value/Description |
|---|---|
| Product Model | 9191-30390 (full catalog number 919130390) |
| Manufacturer | ABB (associated with K-Tron feeding and weighing control systems) |
| Product Category | Primary switch-mode power supply module / industrial circuit board for control and instrumentation cabinets |
| Input Voltage | 100–240 V, AC or DC — two input ranges on one unit, so it can be fed from mains or from a DC battery bus |
| Overload Current | 4.2 A — the continuous ceiling before fold-forward behaviour begins |
| Mains Buffering | Minimum 60 ms, provided by two on-board capacitors — rides through brief interruptions and UPS transfers without the load seeing a dip |
| Overload Characteristic | U/I characteristic with fold-forward behaviour — output degrades gracefully under overload instead of switching off and dropping the cabinet |
| Protection | Open-circuit stable, overload stable, short-circuit stable, with integrated input fusing |
| Cooling | Free convection — no fan, no filter, nothing to clog or fail; low dissipation and low self-heating by design |
| Status Indication | On-board LEDs for power and status — a fault can be diagnosed by eye at the cabinet without a meter |
| Operating Temperature | −25 °C to +70 °C during operation — wide enough for unconditioned plant panels and hot control rooms |
| Construction | Pluggable, vibration-resistant terminal blocks; built-in electrical isolation to keep motor noise off control and data lines |
| Form Factor & Mounting | Approx. 172 × 105 × 60 mm (17.2 × 10.5 × 6 cm), approx. 0.84 kg; structural form designed for installation in distribution panels |
| Typical Applications | K-Tron and ABB feeding, weighing and material-handling control cabinets; regulated DC for controllers, digital force transducers, load cells, CPU, communication and I/O cards |
| Lifecycle Status | Reported discontinued by the manufacturer — supplied from new-surplus or tested inventory with verification |
