Description

The MMII-PD-1-2-120​ is a GE Multilin MM2 Motor Manager II — a microprocessor-based motor protection and management relay designed for three-phase AC induction motors in low-voltage Motor Control Centers (MCCs). It is a panel-mount unit with a built-in two-line alphanumeric LCD and keypad, configured with 120 VAC control power. In one compact device, the MMII-PD-1-2-120​ replaces a collection of discrete components — overload relay, phase-loss monitor, ground-fault sensor, contactor control logic, and motor status indicators — with a single programmable motor manager. It continuously monitors current and process inputs, applies thermal and fault models, controls one or two contactors, and reports real-time motor data and trip history over RS485 Modbus RTU to a PLC, DCS, or SCADA system.

Application Scenarios

A regional water utility was rebuilding an MCC that controlled eight 150 hp pump motors across two well fields. The original panels used electromechanical overload relays, separate phase-loss modules, and a tangle of auxiliary contacts feeding the PLC — and when a pump tripped, the operators saw only a generic “pump fault” alarm with no record of why. During the retrofit, each pump circuit received a MMII-PD-1-2-120​ in the door cutout, with three phase CTs and a ground-fault CT feeding the relay and a shielded twisted-pair run linking all eight units on a Modbus RTU trunk. The core pain point was diagnostic blind spots: a motor could stall, single-phase, or run dry, and maintenance would only discover the cause after disassembling the pump. After commissioning, the operators could see per-phase current, thermal capacity used, and ground-fault current on the local display and in the SCADA faceplate. The first month produced two trips with stored pre-trip data — one confirmed a blocked impeller, the other a failing contactor — both repaired before a motor was damaged.
