The 170INT11003 is an Interbus communication adaptor manufactured by Schneider Electric in partnership with Phoenix Contact, integrating the proven IBS SAB 24 DI 16/16-T slave electronics into a Modicon Momentum-format housing for use on Quantum I/O racks and Momentum I/O bases. It is the bridge that lets a Schneider PLC talk directly to an Interbus fieldbus, carrying 16 digital inputs and 16 digital outputs across a single rugged remote-I/O head — no gateway PC, no protocol converter, no extra cabinet.
What makes the 170INT11003 more than a simple translator is its native Interbus identity. It is a slave device (not a master), addressed from 0 to 254 by two front-panel DIP switches, and it handles the cyclical process-data exchange, parameterization, and diagnostics that Interbus is known for — all while the Schneider CPU sees ordinary discrete I/O words. The module runs on 24 V DC (19.2–30 V), draws 700 mA from the 5 V backplane, and ships with two Phoenix Contact 14-pin terminal blocks for the field wiring. Schneider lists the 170INT11001 as the recommended replacement, which matters because the 170INT11003 was discontinued on 31 December 2007 with service support ending on 31 December 2017 — so the available stock today is new-surplus or tested legacy, and a matched spare is a lifecycle decision rather than a routine purchase.
Application Scenario
A German automotive parts supplier kept an Interbus network of roughly thirty remote stations on its machining lines — valve islands, proximity sensors, rotary encoders, and light curtains — all commissioned in the late 1990s with Phoenix Contact remote-I/O heads. When the plant standardized its control room on a Modicon Quantum system, the automation vendor faced an expensive choice: rip out the entire Interbus wiring and terminations, or find a head that could sit on the Schneider rack and still speak native Interbus to the existing field devices.
The answer was the 170INT11003. The module dropped into the Momentum I/O base on the Quantum rack, the two DIP switches were set to an unused slave address, and the existing Interbus cable and remote stations came up unchanged.
