Product Overview
The ABB 3HAC14551-2 is the Capacitor Unit C3 — a DC-link energy-storage and filtering module that forms part of the drive-system energy section inside the ABB IRC5 robot controller cabinet. It is the quietest component in the cabinet and, paradoxically, the one whose failure stops production fastest. The ABB 3HAC14551-2 does not execute logic, decode fieldbus telegrams, or move a single axis. Its job is simpler and harder: it holds the DC bus voltage steady while six servo axes accelerate, decelerate, brake, and regenerate — repeatedly, every few seconds, for shifts that never end. In the language of the power stage, it is the buffer between the rectified mains and the IGBT inverter; in the language of the maintenance manager, it is the part that decides whether a robot trips on “DC OVERVOLTAGE” at 2 a.m. or runs until the next planned outage.
Physically, the ABB 3HAC14551-2 is a bolt-mounted assembly of three high-ripple-current, low-equivalent-series-resistance (ESR) aluminum electrolytic capacitors in parallel, delivering a total capacitance of 14,100 µF at a rated 450 VDC (3 × 4,700 µF). The parallel arrangement is deliberate: it divides the RMS ripple current across three elements, reduces the effective ESR of the bank, and preserves redundancy — a single element drifting high-ESR raises the bank’s internal heating without immediately opening the circuit. Each element is specified to <15 mΩ ESR and a 30 A RMS ripple current at 120 Hz and 85°C. These are not decorative numbers. During a 6-axis simultaneous deceleration, the servo motors return kilowatts of kinetic energy to the DC bus in milliseconds. Without a low-impedance path, bus voltage spikes; the brake chopper fires, the DC-link capacitor bank absorbs what it can, and the drive logs an overvoltage event. The ABB 3HAC14551-2 is that path.
The ABB 3HAC14551-2 is positioned as a spare part for the IRC5 M2004 drive module (3HAC020536-014) and is fitted to the large-payload, high-inertia IRB class: IRB 6600, IRB 6640, and IRB 7600 robots, as well as drive platforms in the ACS800-M0x / ACS880-M0x family where the same DC-link buffering topology is used. It is a passive, firmware-independent component — no RobotWare update, no parameter change, no calibration. That is its great virtue: it can be swapped cold, from a critical-spare shelf, by a technician who has never opened RobotStudio. The trade-off is that it ages whether the robot runs or not. Electrolytic capacitors dry out; ESR rises; capacitance falls; the first symptom is an intermittent alarm that will not reproduce on the bench. For this reason, ABB’s own maintenance philosophy treats the ABB 3HAC14551-2 as a preventive-replacement item, not a failure-replacement item — and the economics agree. A capacitor unit costs a small fraction of the drive module it protects, and a DC-overvoltage trip on a welding cell costs the weld cycle, the fixture, and sometimes the part.
