The ABB 07KR31 with order code FPR3600227R1202 is the central processing unit (CPU) of ABB’s Procontic CS31 intelligent decentralized automation system — the “brain” of the Series 30 controller family designed for small- to medium-scale distributed control applications. Originally developed by BBC Brown Boveri and later carried through ABB, this compact all-in-one PLC module integrates the processor, user program memory, digital I/O, and CS31 system-bus interface onto a single DIN-rail housing, eliminating the need for separate I/O expansion in basic automation tasks.

Role within the Procontic CS31 System

The CS31 is a decentralized automation system in which a central unit (such as the 07KR31) resides in the main control cabinet while remote I/O plug-in units are installed close to field sensors and actuators, linked by an RS-485 twisted-pair system bus. This topology can reduce wiring cost by up to 80 % compared with conventional centralized PLC schemes.

As the master node, the 07KR31 executes user control programs (typically ladder diagram or instruction list per IEC 61131-3), scans inputs, updates outputs, and supervises all slave modules on the CS31 bus. Each station can address up to 192 binary and 96 analog signals, and the bus can be extended up to 2 km using NCB bus amplifiers.

The 07KR31 is one of several central units in the CS31 range — alongside the 07 KT 31 / 07 KR 91, 07 KT 92, 07 KT 93, and 07 KT 94 — with the KR/KT suffix variants differing in power supply (DC vs. AC) and I/O integration, all sharing the same CS31 system architecture.
