Description
The 1746sc-INI4I is a four-channel isolated analog current input module engineered by Spectrum Controls for the Allen-Bradley SLC 500 programmable logic controller platform, and it carries Rockwell Automation’s Encompass partner branding — it installs in and communicates with a 1746 chassis exactly like an Allen-Bradley product. Each of its four differential input channels is individually isolated from the others and from the backplane, accepting 4–20 mA or 0–20 mA signals from field transmitters and converting them to 16-bit process values that the SLC 500 processor reads through the chassis backplane.
Designed for process loops that sit in electrically hostile, ground-loop-prone panels, the 1746sc-INI4I replaces the usual stack of external analog isolators with one single-width module: 750 V DC channel-to-channel isolation, 750 V DC field-wiring-to-backplane isolation, four selectable filter frequencies, and automatic self-calibration with on-board ambient temperature compensation, all configured through ladder register settings with no DIP switches to set.
Application Scenarios
Picture a chemical blending skid where four 4–20 mA transmitters — tank level, line pressure, pH analyzer current output, and a Coriolis mass-flow meter — sit at different distances from the control panel, each referenced to a different local earth. In a conventional shared-common analog input, those differing earth potentials would appear as a wandering zero drift, and the panel builder would buy four external isolation blocks at roughly the price of the module itself. The integrator instead installed a 1746sc-INI4I in an available 1746 chassis slot. Each transmitter got its own isolated channel, the external isolators came off the bill of materials, and the cabinet lost a row of DIN rail.
The real pain point was not the money — it was the false alarms. Before the retrofit, the pH loop would drift by the equivalent of 0.3 pH during a pump start, because the pump’s transient rode in on the common. After the 1746sc-INI4I was commissioned with its 60 Hz notch filter selected on all four channels, that transient disappeared from the data table; the PID no longer had to be detuned to absorb ghost readings, and the blend ratio held steady. Because the module is fully software-configured — range, filter frequency, open-circuit response, and scaling all set through ladder registers — a like-for-like replacement module took the same configuration as the original and was online in under an hour, with no DIP switches to mis-set and no calibration pots to touch.
