Main Features and Advantages
Digital coded signal for reliable identification: The Fluke 2042 transmitter employs a digitally coded signal that enables the receiver to distinguish the transmitted signal from background electrical noise and other signal sources. This coding is particularly valuable when tracing cables in bundles or conduits where multiple circuits run in parallel, as the receiver can confirm that the detected signal corresponds to the intended cable rather than adjacent conductors.
Live or dead cable operation: Unlike simpler tracers that require de-energized circuits, the Fluke 2042 operates on both live and dead cables without additional instruments. This capability eliminates the need to shut down circuits before tracing, reducing downtime and allowing technicians to diagnose faults in active systems. The receiver’s live voltage indication provides an additional safety layer by alerting the user to the presence of mains voltage during tracing operations.
Automatic and manual sensitivity adjustment: The Fluke 2042 receiver offers both automatic and manual sensitivity modes. In automatic mode, the receiver adjusts its sensitivity based on the detected signal strength, simplifying operation for less experienced users. Manual mode allows precise sensitivity control for experienced technicians working in congested cable environments or when pinpointing the exact location of a cable interruption or short circuit.
Torch function and backlit display: The receiver incorporates a torch lamp function and a backlit LCD display, enabling effective operation in dark environments such as basements, attics, and underground utility spaces. The torch automatically extinguishes after approximately 60 seconds to preserve battery life, while the backlight ensures display visibility in low-light conditions.
Expandable with additional transmitters: The Fluke 2042 system supports additional transmitters (model 2042T) for extension applications or for distinguishing between multiple signals simultaneously. This scalability allows users to trace multiple circuits or pipes in the same area by assigning different transmission codes to each transmitter, expanding the instrument’s utility for complex installation projects.
