Description

Application Scenarios:
A combined-cycle power plant was building the turbine supervisory instrumentation (TSI) system for a new steam turbine generator. The scope covered shaft vibration at multiple bearings, axial thrust position, differential expansion, eccentricity, speed and keyphasor, bearing metal temperatures, plus relay outputs into the emergency trip system and a data path into the plant’s condition-monitoring platform. That is a lot of different measurement types, and the engineering question was whether they belonged in one rack or several.
Putting them in one 3500/05 full-size rack settled it. All monitor modules share a common backplane, so alarm voting, OK status and rack-wide reset are handled in hardware rather than wired between cabinets. The rack accepted two 3500/15 power supplies in redundant configuration — either supply can carry the full rack — and the 3500/22M TDI in the interface slot provided both rack configuration and the Ethernet gateway to System 1. When the plant later added a feedwater pump train to the same system, two empty slots remained in the same rack: new monitors, no new chassis, no new cabinet penetration, no new power supply.
The pain point the 3500/05 addresses is integration cost and expansion risk. Before modular protection racks, each measurement type had its own instrument, its own power arrangement and its own wiring to the trip system. A rack turns that into a single mechanical assembly with one backplane, one power architecture, one grounding point and one configuration tool — and it leaves room to grow.
