Product Overview

The ProSoft 5102-MCM4-DFCM4 is a member of the ProLinx family of stand-alone, DIN-rail mounted protocol gateways, and it solves a problem that confronts almost every plant with mixed-vintage equipment: Modbus devices and Allen-Bradley DF1 devices speak different languages, and neither will learn the other’s. This gateway connects the two worlds through four serial ports, each of which can be individually configured as a Modbus master, a Modbus slave, a DF1 master or a DF1 slave, so a single unit can act as a data concentrator, a protocol bridge, or both at the same time.

At the core of the ProSoft 5102-MCM4-DFCM4 is a shared internal database divided into application, status and configuration areas. Data written into the database by a driver on one port becomes immediately available to drivers on the other ports, which means a Modbus master polling flow meters can deposit its results where a DF1 master on another port picks them up and delivers them to an SLC 500 or PLC-5 processor. Configuration is handled with ProSoft Configuration Builder, which downloads the complete command list, port parameters and database mapping to the module over the dedicated DB-9M RS-232 configuration port.

Because every port is independent, the ProSoft 5102-MCM4-DFCM4 adapts to topologies that would otherwise need several converters: all four ports can run Modbus for pure concentration work, all four can run DF1, or the ports can be split so that the database is shared between protocols. Each application port supports RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 electrical levels with 2500 V RMS port isolation, and the module runs from a nominal 24 VDC supply between 18 and 32 VDC. The ProSoft 5102-MCM4-DFCM4 is rated for -20°C to +50°C operation with 5% to 95% non-condensing humidity, making it suitable for control cabinets in manufacturing, oil and gas, electrical power and food processing environments.

Main Features and Advantages

Four ports, four roles, one database: The defining strength of the ProSoft 5102-MCM4-DFCM4 is that no port is locked into a fixed personality. Any of the four serial ports can be set as a Modbus master or slave, or as a DF1 master or slave, which lets the same hardware serve as a four-channel Modbus data concentrator in one application and as a Modbus-to-DF1 bridge in the next. All four ports read and write the same internal database, so data crosses between protocols without external wiring or a supervisory computer.

Full Modbus capability on both sides of the conversation: The Modbus driver on the ProSoft 5102-MCM4-DFCM4 handles RTU and ASCII framing with CRC-16 or LRC error checking, supports function codes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 15 and 16, and moves floating point values including the Enron floating point convention used widely in gas and petroleum measurement. As a master, each port stores up to 100 individually configured commands with selectable polling behaviour — continuous, on change of data, or enabled dynamically — and as a slave it presents up to 247 selectable node addresses to any Modbus host.

DF1 integration with Rockwell processors: On the DF1 side, the ProSoft 5102-MCM4-DFCM4 operates as a full-duplex master generating commands, a half-duplex polling master, or a slave that accepts reads and writes into its internal registers from an Allen-Bradley master. With BCC or CRC error checking, full hardware handshaking for radio and multi-drop modem applications, and a data table file of up to 1000 words per slave port, the gateway fits naturally into networks built around PLC-5, SLC 500, MicroLogix and ControlLogix serial architectures.

Industrial electrical design that protects the network: Every serial port on the ProSoft 5102-MCM4-DFCM4 carries 2500 V RMS signal isolation with 3000 V DC port-to-ground and port-to-logic withstand, which is what prevents ground loops and surge damage from propagating along a multi-drop RS-485 trunk. The wide 18 to 32 VDC supply range tolerates the voltage sag typical of long cabinet runs, and per-port activity and error LEDs let a technician see which link has failed without opening a laptop.

Commissioning that does not require protocol expertise: Configuration is performed in ProSoft Configuration Builder using a graphical tree-structured layout with module-specific online help, replacing the older HyperTerminal download method and greatly reducing setup errors. The status data area exposes error codes, counters and per-port status that can be read during commissioning and troubleshooting, and because the configuration file can be uploaded from an installed unit, an existing working setup can be archived or cloned to a replacement module.
