Description

Application Scenarios
A water utility experienced repeated pressure fluctuations after expanding a pumping station with additional variable-speed drives, remote telemetry units and third-party flow computers. The original single controller could still run the process, but any processor reset, backplane fault or planned maintenance created operational risk.
Rather than redesign the entire control system, the plant retained its Modicon Quantum installed base and deployed a redundant controller architecture built around the 140CPU67160. The primary processor executed the control program and maintained I/O communication, while the standby processor tracked the synchronized application state. Integrated Modbus Plus and Modbus connections linked local operator panels, drives and instrumentation, and the fiber-based redundancy infrastructure supported a geographically separated redundant rack.
The result was not simply “two processors in one cabinet.” It was a controlled continuity strategy: maintain process variables, coordinate I/O ownership and give operations staff clearer visibility into redundancy health. For plants that cannot absorb a sudden controller restart, that distinction is often more valuable than a marginal increase in raw scan speed.
