Preservation Standards for Industrial Electronics
Unlike standard mechanical parts, sensitive PLC and DCS modules degrade silently on warehouse shelves if environmental parameters drift. Uncontrolled humidity corrodes backplane traces, while stagnant storage degrades internal electrolytic capacitors.

Warehouse Preservation: Humidity, ESD, and Capacitor Re-Forming
Recommended Environmental Storage Thresholds
| Parameter | Recommended Setpoint | Operating Tolerance | Impact of Non-Compliance |
| Temperature | 20°C (68°F) | 15°C – 25°C | Thermal cycling weakens micro-solder joints |
| Relative Humidity | 40% RH | 30% – 50% RH | >60% causes dendrite growth; <20% increases ESD risks |
| Air Filtration | ISO 14644-1 Class 8 | G4 Pre-filter + F8 | Sulfur/chlorine gas causes silver pin tarnishing |
| Electrostatic Field | < 100 Volts | Continuous Grounding | Latent gate oxide puncture in CMOS ICs |

Procedures for Spares Idle Over 3 Years
1. Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor Re-Forming
Modules containing DC-link capacitors (power supply units, servo amplifiers) suffer aluminum oxide layer degradation during prolonged unpowered storage. Sudden application of full rated operational voltage causes violent dielectric breakdown. Technicians must gradually ramp input DC voltage using a current-limited DC bench power supply according to the staged schedule above.
2. Onboard Lithium Battery Maintenance
Track the production date of all memory-backup cells. Lithium-thionyl chloride cells exhibit a passivation layer when stored without load. Run open-circuit voltage tests every 12 months; any cell reading under 3.5V DC (for 3.6V nominal cells) should be retired.
3. Anti-Static Enclosure Inspection
Never store industrial modules in plain bubble wrap or non-conductive plastic totes. Only high-grade metalized static-shielding bags with surface resistivity of 10^9 to 10^{11} ohms/sq provide Faraday-cage attenuation against stray factory electrostatics.
