Description
The Durant 5882-1 is a five-digit, single-preset electronic count control from the President Series manufactured by Eaton Corporation under the Durant count-and-control brand — cataloged in full as 5882-1400 (also written 58821-400), and identifiable on the front bezel simply as model 5882-1. It accepts pulse inputs from proximity switches, magnetic pickups, encoders, and logic contacts, scales raw counts into real-world engineering units, and trips its built-in relay or transistor output the moment the preset is reached — making it the workhorse batch and production counter on packaging, roll-forming, cut-to-length, and dispensing lines.
The instrument pairs a bright .56 in (14 mm) seven-segment LED display with a sealed, color-coded NEMA 4 keypad, two-way 20 mA current-loop serial communications at 1200 baud, selectable 115/230 Vac or 11-28 Vdc power, and non-volatile memory that needs no backup battery — a combination that kept the 5882-1 on OEM machine panels for decades and keeps it on critical-spares lists today. Although Eaton has discontinued the President Series, the 5882-1 remains fully supported through refurbished supply and professional repair channels.
Application Scenarios
Consider a high-speed bottling line where a photoelectric sensor generates one pulse per container passing the infeed star wheel, and a case packer downstream needs to fire a divert solenoid every 24 bottles. A PLC could do the job, but for a single count-and-divert function the machine builder wanted a panel-mounted instrument the line operators could preset and reset themselves — no programming laptop, no ladder edits, no HMI screen buried three menus deep.
That is exactly the duty the Durant 5882-1 was engineered for. The sensor wires directly to the count input with its power drawn from the control’s system-matched DC auxiliary output; the operator keys “24” into the preset register on the color-coded keypad; and each time the count register reaches the preset, the internal relay output fires the case-packer divert while the display holds the running batch total. Because the front panel is sealed to NEMA 4, the same instrument survives daily washdown in food and beverage plants, and because the memory is non-volatile, an unexpected power dip during changeover does not erase the batch count or the preset. In this kind of application the 5882-1 removes the PLC from the critical path entirely — one less program to validate, one less failure point, and an operator interface that production supervisors can train new hires on in minutes.
