Description

Application Scenarios
A packaging plant runs a form-fill-seal machine where the film is pulled by a measuring wheel fitted with a pulse encoder. Operators need the machine to stop after a precise bag count, and production wants the shift total displayed in bags rather than encoder pulses. The existing arrangement — a basic totalizer plus a separate limit-switch relay — drifts, loses its count on every power dip, and requires a manual reset at the start of each run.
Fitting 5882-1 into the panel cut-out consolidates all of that into one instrument. The encoder pulses feed the count input; a scale factor converts those pulses to bags on the five-digit LED display; the preset is entered from the front keypad; and when the count hits the preset, the plug-in relay with two form-C contacts drops out the film drive and flags the batch complete. Because 5882-1 stores its setup and count value in non-volatile memory, a power interruption mid-batch does not lose the count — the run resumes where it stopped rather than restarting from zero.
The pain points this addresses are the familiar ones in discrete manufacturing: count and control split across multiple devices, production totals that do not survive a power dip, displays in meaningless raw units, and output relays that require a panel strip-down to replace. With a NEMA 4 sealed front panel, 5882-1 also survives the washdown and dust conditions that kill ordinary panel instruments.
Parameter
| Main Parameters | Value/Description |
|---|---|
| Product Model | 5882-1 (ordering form 58821-400; also written 5882-1400) |
| Manufacturer | Durant (brand now under Eaton Corporation) |
| Product Category | Single-preset, bi-directional count control — President Series panel instrument |
| Display | Five-digit, high-visibility red 7-segment LED, 0.56 in (14.2 mm) character height, programmable decimal point position |
| Count Modes | Operates as “Reset to Preset” (output when count reaches zero) or “Reset to Zero” (output when count equals preset) |
| Count Direction | Bi-directional — counts up or down, so it can接受 reversible encoder/ quadrature input |
| Scaling Function | Yes — scale factor 0.0001 to 9.9999 multiplies incoming pulses; the scaled result is displayed in engineering units |
| Input Signals | Pulse, contact closure and electronic sensor inputs; quadrature encoder input on the scalable version (confirm exact input types per installed unit) |
| Outputs | Plug-in, field-replaceable relay with two form-C contacts, plus a transistor output for high-speed or PLC interfacing |
| Memory | Non-volatile — setup instructions and count values retained through power loss; no batteries required |
| Power Input | 115/230 V AC or 11–28 V DC — dual-range input for application flexibility (verify against the module label) |
| Communications | Two-way 20 mA current loop, 1200 baud serial |
| Front Panel Protection | Sealed to NEMA 4 — suitable for washdown, dust and damp industrial environments |
| Keypad | Polycarbonate Lexan face; ten data keys (0–9), COUNT, RESET, FUNCTION and ENTER; the “1” key doubles as PRESET |
| Wiring Terminations | Rear-panel screw terminals, 28–14 AWG solid or stranded |
| Physical | Approx. 0.91 kg (2.0 lb) as listed by major surplus suppliers; 1/8 DIN-class panel cut-out (confirm cut-out dimensions against the unit) |
| Counting Speed | Not confirmed in Durant literature for the standard model; distributor data quotes up to 7.5 kHz — the 30 kHz rating belongs to the separate 58867400 high-speed variant, not to 5882-1 |
| Lifecycle Status | Discontinued by the manufacturer; available through specialist legacy and surplus channels |
