In an offshore oil and gas platform, the Emergency Shutdown (ESD) system must maintain continuous operation even when individual power supply units degrade or fail. The HONEYWELL 10302/2/1 functions as the watchdog supervision node within the FSC rack, continuously monitoring the 5 Vdc and 24 Vdc rails that power critical output modules controlling shutdown valves. When a secondary power supply began drifting toward overvoltage during a grid instability event, the 10302/2/1 detected the anomaly and withheld the watchdog output, triggering a controlled fail-safe state rather than allowing potentially damaged I/O modules to operate outside specification. This intervention prevented a valve actuation failure that could have compromised platform safety.
