Main Features and Advantages
Dedicated network processing: The Honeywell 10018/2/U offloads all UCN communication tasks from the FSC control processor, running the token-bus protocol stack on its own Motorola 68360 controller with dedicated firmware in flash memory. Because the safety logic solver and the network interface are physically separate, a burst of network traffic or a UCN disturbance does not consume scanning time or compromise the deterministic execution of the safety application. On power-up, the application program is downloaded automatically from the control processor into local RAM, so the module reaches operational state without manual intervention.
Redundant isolated link: High availability is achieved through two independent UCN connections, A and B, both brought out on the front of the Honeywell 10018/2/U and electrically isolated from the FSC system bus. If one channel is disturbed by a cable fault or an adjacent node problem, the second channel continues to carry data, and the A and B LEDs show immediately which path is active. This redundancy matters in continuous process plants, where losing the safety system view on the operator console can force a conservative manual shutdown even though the process itself is still safe.
Transparent diagnostics: Front-panel indication on the Honeywell 10018/2/U gives maintenance teams the complete picture without a service tool. The STATUS LED distinguishes between loss of backplane power, offnet or alive state, normal UCN operation and program failure, while the Tx LED confirms data transmission and the P LED identifies the primary node in redundant configurations. Fault finding is therefore reduced to a visual walk-down of the rack, which shortens mean time to repair during a plant upset.
Drop-in replacement engineering: The Honeywell 10018/2/U is the flash-memory successor to the discontinued 10008/2/U and retains the same 8 TE / 3 HE footprint, backplane pinning, jumper-selectable COM1–COM4 addressing and front connector layout. Modules carrying suffix code 22701 and higher incorporate minor motherboard design changes for improved reliability, so the Honeywell 10018/2/U fits existing FSC Central Part slots with no cabinet modification, preserving the approved safety configuration and avoiding re-validation of field wiring.
