Triconex 9668-110 Non-Commoned Relay Output Termination Panel — SIL 3 Field Wiring Interface for ESD and BMS Loops

Brand
Model Triconex 9668-110

Product Overview

The Triconex 9668-110 is a non-commoned relay output termination board — also described in Triconex documentation as an external termination panel, or ETP — developed for the Tricon v9 and v10 Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) safety platform. It does not execute safety logic itself; instead, the Triconex 9668-110 forms the disciplined physical boundary between the relay output module seated in the Tricon chassis and the field devices that must physically act on a trip command, such as solenoid valves, motor starters, horn and beacon circuits, annunciator lamps and interposing relays.

Each 9668-110 breaks out sixteen independent output circuits, and every circuit is provided with its own LOAD+ and LOAD− terminal pair, its own PWR+ and PWR− field-power pair, and its own replaceable fuse. Because the relay output module driving it — typically a Triconex 9668-110 companion module such as the 3636R or 3636T — presents 32 points, two panels are required to land a complete module, and each panel ships with both 1–16 and 17–32 label sets so the second bank of channels can be identified without ambiguity during commissioning or loop checking.

The real value of the Triconex 9668-110 lies in what it preserves. In a safety instrumented function, a shared return or a shared fuse is a shared cause of failure: one shorted field cable can silently disable several trip paths at once. By keeping load, field power and protection fully separate point by point, this panel keeps faults local, keeps troubleshooting traceable at terminal level, and keeps the output channel architecture consistent with the separation philosophy that the TMR voting upstream is designed to deliver.

Main Features and Advantages

True non-commoned channel architecture: Every one of the sixteen output circuits on the Triconex 9668-110 carries its own LOAD+ / LOAD− pair, its own PWR+ / PWR− pair and its own fuse. There is no shared return and no shared protective device, so a single field-side short circuit or ground fault cannot propagate into neighbouring trip paths. For safety loops, this is the difference between a nuisance alarm on one channel and the silent loss of several shutdown functions.

Per-channel fusing with visible fault indication: The Triconex 9668-110 is populated with sixteen fast-acting fuses, one per channel, and each fuse position is backed by a blown-fuse indicator that maintenance staff can read directly on the panel without a multimeter or a diagnostic laptop. A technician walking the cabinet can identify a failed circuit in seconds, replace the fuse on the spot and confirm recovery visually, which shortens mean time to repair on exactly the loops where downtime is most expensive.

Clean separation of load and field power: Physically grouping LOAD terminals apart from PWR terminals reduces the most common field-wiring error in shutdown cabinets — crossing a supply with a switched leg. The 9668-110 layout makes the intended current path self-evident, which lowers commissioning risk, simplifies as-built documentation and helps a new technician read the loop correctly years after the original installers have moved on.

Designed for the 32-point module economy: Because the mating relay output module offers 32 points, the Triconex 9668-110 is deliberately kept at 16 points with dual 1–16 and 17–32 label sets. Two panels can be mounted side by side, or one panel can be paired with a basic panel where the application allows, giving panel builders freedom to match wiring density to the cabinet without forcing a re-engineering of the safety logic.

Built for the service life of a safety system: Relay output loops in refineries, gas plants and power stations are expected to run for decades. The 9668-110 uses industrial-grade terminal blocks and a robust board substrate that tolerate cabinet heat, vibration and repeated re-termination, and it is a form-fit-function match to the original part, so a like-for-like replacement introduces no change to the chassis, backplane cabling or field wiring schedule.
