Description
Application Scenarios
In a large aluminum smelter, the potline rectifier bank converts AC grid power into the massive DC current required for electrolytic reduction. Each rectifier arm relies on series-connected thyristors to control the DC output voltage with precision. When an aging thyristor in one arm developed an elevated forward voltage drop, the resulting current imbalance threatened to derate the entire potline—a production loss measured in tens of thousands of dollars per hour.
The maintenance team replaced the suspect device with an ABB 5STP26N6500. Its matched threshold voltage and slope resistance values ensured proper current sharing with the remaining parallel devices, while the low on-state voltage drop reduced additional conduction losses. The rectifier returned to full capacity without requiring rebalancing of the entire arm.
